Fame is a hidden, but very important stat in FFXI. Higher ranks will grant you reduced prices in shops and access to new quests which were previously unattainable. Fame ranks are measured separately for each nation and must be increased by completing quests for NPC's. There is an NPC located within each nation whom you may ask to learn of your current rank. The quickest way to increase your fame is by seeking out quests that can be repeated.

These quests raise fame in all nations if I'm not not mistaken. Some will raise fame faster in one and slower in another and vice-versa.
