PostSubject: Upgrading PC for FFXIV {planning time}   Sat Mar 27, 2010 11:26 pm

Been looking over at Newegg and reading all around the net; customer reviews & benchmarks of many parts and for the best value without gouging myself by choosing parts that exceed $1000 or more and will still far exceed my current setup. I'm only planning on replacing parts in my PC instead of buying an all new case, PS, HDDs, etc...all that still works great but the internal power parts are going on 3 yrs old this summer, and while I still have no issues running anything on max to nearly max settings I want even more power...especially a quad-core CPU, and 8GB ram.

After many hrs today I've pretty much decided on these items:

Which total $603.96, and thats before any type of sales or rebates and shipping costs, plus I don't plan to purchase these items for several months yet so they could drop in price even more.

I'm also contemplating whether to try and find a 2nd EVGA GTX 275 video card, and SLi with my current one, or just wait until this Nov or so when FFXIV should be nearing launch, and save up til then and just get one of the newest EVGA GTX 480.
The GTX 480 is currently going for about $629 through EVGA which is whom I'll buy from should I be able to afford one, and I'm thinking as quickly as prices fluctuate on PC parts, especially video cards, I'd image that price would drop by 1/2 or more by Nov or so, making it plenty affordable too me.

Still trying to find a good benchmark site to compare my GTX 275 with the GTX 480, but just looking at the stats of the two side-by-side, the 480 is clearly 10x better as it should be...rofl

I'll be watching out for a chart and post it when I can, but what do you all think of these choices for the value!?

There's a review of the 480 here: http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=24000&page=1 that has the gtx275 in the benchmarks, so you'll be able to compare performance. I was looking at this earlier and have decided to wait until it goes down in price a bit. The 275 will suffice for now!

Didn't know about this benchmark. It's very nice :o

My gfx card could use an upgrade, which I shall most likely be doing this summer :p

Hrm, think I may be making a few changes to my current selections:

Still think I wanna go with this choice at $180.99:
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz

~but there is also this older model $20 cheaper and the only difference is its a 3.2GHZ opposed to the 3.4GHZ above and that small difference wouldn't really be noticeable:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz

Am considering changing RAM because of customer reviews and the $37 cheaper price tag since I plan to purchase 8GB:
A-DATA Gaming Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

Then even the Motherboard I was looking at looks great and all and has good reviews, but there are many features on it that appear to be hiking the price up that I'll never use like dual and quad crossfire linking and since I run nVidia anyway, its entirely useless, plus I really know little about MSI, and have always used ASUS. So here is the other MB I'm considering; because of customer reviews and the price difference:
Xtreme Design w/ CrossFireX, DDR3 1800

If I make these changes my total price would only be $494 now instead of $600+ which is a nice price drop with very similar specs and prolly un-noticable differences in performance. However, my current PC setup runs everything just fine at max to near maximum settings so would getting these parts in the next month be worth it, or wait a few months and wait for even better parts to drop lower!? Or should I just go ahead and get them since its already gonna make my PC like 6-10x better than it already is and then the only thing I have to worry about before FFXIV is getting the nVidia 480...

I only see you saving mabe 100$ more, off of that by the time FFXIV hits the market.

you would be good for the next 3-4 years no problem (if not more) with that system.

Waiting for the vid card to drop is key but the rest will not drop much lower.

I say YES XD

I made a mistake when I designed our computers. I thought more games would come out SLI ready and so I went with a motherboard that supported that instead of DDR3....I'm only going to get to upgrade the ram to 8 gigs of DDR2. Do you think this is going to be enough (if I change to Windows 7 from Vista)?

If we have to get new motherboards and 8 gigs of DDR3 I don't think we will be able to afford it.

8 gigs of DDR2 should be fine seeing as windows 7 uses less resources than vista

Your computer will play XIV fine. I dont see the mem speed making much diffrence then a fraction of a second when loading seamless zones.

Like most games a really big CPU will do the most diffrence, but
By the looks of it the Crystal Engine they are using will not support quad core.

So spending your load on top speed vid card would be best for you.

Crystal Tools and I'm looking for the article, but I'm quite sure SE has already stated that FFXIV will be optimized for Quad-Core CPUs.

I know the Just cause Avalanche Engine supports Quads, but.
Since the only game made with Crystal Tools engine Is FF XIII
Its hard to find information on PC performence.

It will definatly help to have a 3+ Ghz Quad core if you intend to have 5 fan site open at the same time your playing XD

I read the engine will be easy to scale and they can add plugins that can accomodate alot of diffrence between platforms.

Not running the bench at my native res as I wanted to compare against Satha's rig as I have a 920 also.

I will probly end up getting another 280 soon but I don't know yet as my rig is fine and I still have a little more overclocking to do on my CPU. Not sure if I want to waste my money on old tech as the refreshes for this tech should be out a little after the 480 and then here comes the faster cards. I will more than likely wait until then.

And why are you guys benching in DX11 when your cards cannot do DX11? Bring it down to DX10 to get a more accurate score.

I ran it on DX10 for me because my card and setup will do DX10. I didn't run it for DX11.

Ran it again, in DX9 since thats what FFXIV will use, and turned off Anti and Ansi... Much better performance this time!

Same settings in DX10, dunno why it has the - listed this time...maybe cause I had Photoshop still open...dunno!

I was reading it will use both DX9 and DX10 khalus.

N other thing.
When you played FFXIII was the graphics really good?
Cause the PS3 have duo core running at arround 3Ghz,
and the GPU on there are no better then (280 Nvidia).

Id wait to see if it supports 4 core beffor spending anymoney, cause if they dont your better off with a top end duo core you can overclock the bejesus out of.

That would save you even more money.

Some of the people with quads lower then 2.8 ghz could actually lag more then a duo core 3Ghz +.

I'm not upgrading a thing until I play the full retail version o.o otherwise I could be wasting money since it's hard to say what the requirements will be, and even then maybe the game will still look good on my PC and upgrading would only make the grass sway in the wind, I daresay I am not spending hundreds of dollars to get better grass when that's the last thing I'll be looking at once I start getting chased by mobs D:

Obviously I'm not saying the grass is all it would improve on, I just don't need to have every slider maxed out to be satisfied with a game :p if once I play it, I decide I am not happy with the graphics and an upgrade would make it better, I will upgrade, til then... saving mah moneh!

I already have a quad core processor, I wasn't planning on changing that. I'm pretty much going to upgrade the amount of ram I have even if it is only DDR2 and up my graphics card. I am going to wait until closer to release though before I spend a dime on anything.

I saw that, Khal Onigiri XD lol

I need a new motherboard because this one is garbage, but I don't wanna reseat my CPU Onigiri Dead

I was also looking at the 480 and it seems to use a lot of power and generate a lot of heat. Hopefully by release they'll have refined or updated this technology. Then maybe I'll get two 480s for SLI lol

how's AMD working out for you anyways? I'm an intel user, so I'm not sure aboot AMD.

Nay, was a figment of my rambling audacity you didn't really see....hehe

Love AMD, flawlessly excellent! Never used Intel so dunno really how to respond either...

Dunno how to respond to SLi either since very few things use it, and quite frankly if you have a good enough card, only one has been more than efficient for anything I've run so far.

Just an FYI because I have used SLI. If a game is not set up for it (and I can't think of one that is) it will not work and cause all sorts of problems. I tried SLI with AoC and WoW both times I couldn't use the game correctly and weird things happened with my graphics.

For general use on the computer and multi-tasking outside of gaming it is sweet!!!! But it was too much of pain for me to have to disable SLI to start games.

Of course it's up to you but I am just letting you know not to be suprised if it doesn't work. I wasn't the only one who had trouble. If you do some research online you will see it is a common problem.
